Torches Motel, Barstow California

Originally the Hollon Motel from the 1940's, the Torches Motel is still operating. This great neon sign buzzes with retro charm, in a 1950's font that almost screams “Elvis was here", or at least his less famous cousin. The mural on the wall out front represents all eight of the Route 66 states. Those orange ceramic tiles, baked to withstand the relentless desert heat, are the unsung heroes of the Torches Motel. They’re like the motel’s own personal sunscreen, shrugging off the sun’s wrath while adding a dash of Spanish Mission flair to an otherwise unassuming facade. You can see it on Main Street in Barstow, CA
