Apple Valley Country Store, Calvert City Kentucky
What started as a produce stand called Shady Nook at an apple orchard in 1928, this country store was built in 1931 by multi-talented entrepreneur Oral Wallace. In the store was a chair where Oral gave hair cuts and a four seat diner. The property also had rooms to rent, an auto camp with accommodations for automobile travelers and a small zoo. Oral was a musician and often performed for the guests. Rumor has it that Bonnie and Clyde once stayed here in 1933. A gas station was added in 1939 and the store and gas station were non segregated and open to all which was not popular with the county during those times. The store and station closed when Oral died in 1964 and his wife Myrtle returned to operating a produce stand until 1988. Years later, a grandson came back and revived the property and opened Apple Valley Hillbilly Garden and Toyland. This place is worth stop on US Highway 68 in Calvert City, KY
