Back in 1908, when Daggett was a bustling hub for miners chasing silver and borax, the original General Supply Store went up in flames. Undeterred, the owner rebuilt it with a carload of cement, making it the Mojave’s first fireproof building. The new spanish-styled building was renamed Ryerson’s General Store, it became a lifeline for prospectors trading gold dust for dollars and a place where the desert’s secrets were swapped over the counter. Over 100 years later, the building hasn't changed much. Step inside today and you'll find a five-aisle wonderland of groceries, energy drinks, beer, cigarettes, lottery tickets, U-Haul rentals, Western Union hub and US Post Office. When we stopped, there was a friendly man behind the counter who engaged us in conversation about out travels, thanked us for stopping and wished us well on our trip. Make sure to stop by on Santa Fe Street in Daggett, CA
