Polly Gas Sign, Helendale California

This sign stood in front of Watson's Polly gas station, which is now gone. The Polly Gas brand was in operation from 1914 to the 1960's when the brand disappeared under the ownership of Gulf Oil Company. The sign’s survival is a minor miracle, given the number of Route 66 landmarks that have succumbed to time, neglect, or “progress.” It’s like the last guest at a party who refuses to leave, still telling stories while everyone else has gone home. Keep an eye out for this sassy parrot. Give it a nod, snap a pic, and maybe whisper a thank-you to Polly for keeping the spirit of the open road alive as you drive by on National Trails Highway in Helendale, CA
