This hotel began as the Barstow Auto Court back in 1922. The name change and addition of the, still working, neon sign happened sometime during or after the 1950's. I wish I would have gotten a better picture of the carports and parking lot because scattered across the grounds are the real stars of the show; a fleet of antique cars, their chrome dulled by decades of desert sun but their charisma still gleaming. Like time machines on flat tires, each one a relic of Route 66’s glory days when tailfins were king. They wear their dents and faded paint like badges of honor, parked like proud retirees, soaking up the Mojave sun. You should see them for yourself on Main Street in Barstow, CA
