Built in 1975, this classic looking A-framed entrance building may look familiar to some. It's a cinematic shrine that was originally the Sidewinder Cafe until 1995 when it was reborn as the Bagdad Cafe, thanks to a little German film that turned a nowhere pitstop into a somewhere destination. The 1987 cult classic Bagdad Cafe didn’t just put this place on the map; it drew a neon arrow to it, luring travelers from around the world to soak in its offbeat magic. While filmed at the cafe here in Newberry, the film is set in Bagdad California. Bagdad is a ghost town on Route 66 that was abandoned in the 1970's after Interstate 40 re-routed travelers and by-passed the town. So, you'll find the cafe on National Trails Highway in Newberry Springs, CA
